Buying scuba gear for beginner.?
I am planing on taking a scuba diving class. Insted of renting the equipment to use in class I would rather use that money to by my own set. I have decided to buy the equipment peace buy peace (of course buy the regulator hoses and gages in one peace). After comparing the price of full used sets and all the pieces it looks to be alot cheaper to buy it like that. So my question is is all scuba equipment from different brands and times compatible with each other? I am aware that the gear must have an inspection. Please give only educated answers this is my summer pay I am investing.
1. Check the location that you are taking your classes. Many times they will offer students a discount on the gear.
2. I would buy new gear. I know two people that have kept meticulous records of all of their gear, and I would buy used gear from them. All other used gear is risky at best.
3. For the most part the gear is interchangeable with a couple of exceptions:
-- DIN vs Yolk connections - There are two common type of regulator first stages and tank valves. If you are in Europe the more common type is DIN. If you are in the US, recreational tends to use Yolk and more serious tend to use DIN. I don't know about the Pacific. Central/South American and the Caribbean follows the US for valve type. Just buy the first stage that will work on tanks in your area.
-- Low pressure inflator hose - This is a hose length issue. With different type of inflators on the market, a new BCD will normally come with the proper inflator house.
Everything else is fairly interchangeable. For example, for the regulator assembly, you could have five different manufacturers: first stage, second stage (primary), second stage (alternate), HP hose for gauges, and the LP inflator hose. All will work together.
