The Main Scuba Diving Tanks to Select
In order to scuba dive, you need air. This may seem like the most basic of basic assessments and mostly everyone realizes you need a scuba tank as an air source when you dive. Do not, however, confuse understanding the need for a tank with taking very careful steps towards purchasing the right tank. You really do need to deliberate on the tank you purchase since. not all compressors/tanks are identical and you should acquire one that is most appropriate.
Which tanks should you consider purchasing? If you are like most divers, you are probably involved mainly with recreational diving as opposed to commercial. For recreational diving, the two most common tanks available on the market would be ones made from aluminum and those made from steel. The benefit to aluminum tanks is that they are extremely light in weight. However, steel is a far, far more durable material and steel tanks are built to last a lot longer. Remember, no matter how much care you take in handling your scuba diving tank, accidents do happen and steel tanks are far less prone to suffering damage. That said, you will pay accordingly for your steel tank as they are more expensive than an aluminum model.
Quality aluminum tanks can be purchased for anywhere from $175 - $250. A steel scuba diving tank can cost in the range of $350 - $500 although there are some cheaper models of steel tanks available in the $230 range. All the top names in the world of scuba equipment are present and accounted for when running down a list of scuba tank manufacturers. Sherwood, XS, Faber, and H20 are among the top names producing a variety of excellent tanks.
Steel tanks are available in both high and low pressure The high pressure tanks have the benefit of being smaller and can hold a larger volume of air than the low pressure version but the low pressure models are still perfectly fine for use. One issue you do need to be mindful of when you purchase any type of steel scuba diving tank would be the fact these tanks are nowhere near as buoyant as an aluminum one.
Whether purchasing steel or aluminum tanks, you also need to be mindful of what the tank can actually hold. Most divers will fill their tanks with air. However, nitrox can also be filled in tanks capable of handling it. Nitrox is perfect for much longer durations underwater and many recreational divers that start their hobby using air tanks exclusively wish to make the switch to becoming a Nitrox diver. In doing so, it is important you have the proper scuba diving tank capable of storing and delivering nitrox to a regulator.
Most scuba tanks are sold as singles but twin tanks are also available. Twin tanks are commonly used for commercial diving purposes since recreational dives generally do not require being submerged from significantly extended lengths of time.
And did you know that many of these tanks come in different colors? While looks are not the main thing people seek in a scuba diving tank. However, if you have the option of picking a color that matches your aesthetic requirements in a tank.
Up until this point, we have been discussing primary tanks. It is critical to also purchase a smaller auxiliary tank in case the primary tank malfunctions or runs out of air. Such tanks are not much different than the primary one other than the fact the tank is smaller and holds less air.
