What happens if you scuba dive deeper on a second dive?

We dove in Costa Rica and while our first divemaster was fantastic, our second was not so much. It wasn't necessarily on purpose but we ended up at 90ft on the second dive. I was just curious how dangerous it was (obviously I'm alive and well). We did 50 ft for about 40 min on the first dive, took a break for 27 minutes, then did the second dive, it should have been 45-50 ft, but there was about 5-10 minutes where we were at 90ft and judging by how long we were in that area, at least another 10 minutes at 60-80 ft. I used my dive tables and was shocked to learn that doing a second dive at 90ft gave me about 17 min of diving (we dove for 45 min on this dive). I'm guessing to log it as multi-level?

I'm new to scuba diving, so I'm just curious if this was dangerous (or how dangerous) and what the risks could be? My friend and I felt motion sick for a couple hours afterward and had soreness and stiffness--although that could have been from other things we'd done in Costa Rica.

The dive tables won't be useful in a situation like this. The tables are designed with the thought that you go to the deepest part of your dive, stay there for the duration, then you ascend. The tables do not give you credit for being at depth for a portion of the dive, but much shallower for the balance of it.

With the information provided, I don't think you have anything to worry about. The symptoms of decompression sickness don't "just go away". If you are feeling fine now, then I would say that nothing happened. If you are worried or still ahve pain/discomfort, then I would recommend going to the doctor to seek treatment.

This is a great lesson to learn the power of a dive computer. While on your dive, the computer will account for your previous dives and update your NDL based on your current depth. It gives you real-time information instead of the square profile of the tables. With the computer, you can't neglect the planning stage of the dive, but the computer will let you get the most out of your bottom time.

Edit: You can also run the second dive as a series of three dives with a 0 min surface interval between each dive. For example, 90 feet for 10 mins, 0 mins surface interval, 60 feet for 9 mins, 0 min surface interval, and 40 feet for 21 mins. Doing this and using a 30 min surface interval after your first dive, you were still on the table. Riding the limits of the table, but still on it.
