Scuba Diving Snorkels
Never Overlook the Value of Scuba Diving Snorkels
No piece of scuba diving equipment should ever be overlooked. This includes equipment which can be erroneously categorized as being of secondary importance. All pieces of equipment serve necessary purposes and scuba diving snorkels fall under such a categorization. Since these snorkels are not used very much during a scuba dive, many will purchase snorkels as an afterthought if they even purchase them at all. This is not the proper approach to take because snorkels fill an important role when you are close to or at the surface of the water. Because of this it is necessary to acquire the best possible name brand snorkel within your budget range.
To those new to the sport and hobby of scuba diving, the presence of scuba diving snorkels might seem a bit curious. Why would anyone need a snorkel if they are intended to dive 30 feet or more below the surface of the water? While it is true that scuba diving is not snorkeling, the snorkel provides a great help to a diver. Namely, it ensures you have a decent supply of air without requiring you to use the air in your tanks.
Imagine jumping off the back of the dive boat and waiting for the rest of your party to enter the water. You will be relying on buoyancy to keep you afloat and this means you may be at the mercy of the waves which may very well be choppy. If your head is going up and down the surface of the water, scuba diving snorkels ensure this is not distressing or troubling. Rather, you will gain such an easy and unobstructed flow of air you will not even realize you are using a snorkel. This definitely would make your initial entry into the water a lot less stressful and it also eliminates the need to tap into the air in your scuba tank.
Snorkels also serve a valuable purpose when your dive is over. When you reach the surface of the water and you are quite a distance from the boat, you will need to swim to it. Your snorkel will provide the air you need during this brief swim and if your tanks are low on oxygen you will have to rely on the snorkel.
Really, why would you want to access the air in your scuba tank when an alternative air source exists? Save the air in your tank for the time you are properly submerged.
As previously mentioned, you do want a high quality grade of scuba snorkel to accompany you on your trip. Cutting corners and going with a lower quality snorkel will not improve your diving experience. This is why you need to perform the right amount of consumer research to be sure you are buying the best snorkel for your needs. Most importantly, you want a high grade snorkel designed for scuba diving. Adding beach style shallow water snorkels to your goggles will prove disastrous. You need high grade scuba diving snorkels made of the proper material to weather the ocean waters. Durable snorkels made of silicon would be the type you should be purchasing. At the very least, you would want snorkels made from high grade hard plastic.

There are three major types of scuba diving snorkels most find to be the most popular. These are:
- Dry Snorkels
- Semi-Dry Snorkels
- Purge Snorkels
A Dry Snorkel is probably the most popular snorkel as it is designed to reduce the potential for water entering the tube accidentally. The engineering of such scuba diving snorkels is quite amazing. A sensor valve is designed into the snorkel which can tell the difference in weight between air and water. As such, when your body is moving up and down in the water, a dry snorkel will shut off the valve when it senses the tip is about to be submerged. This prevents water from getting into the snorkel and ensuring you do not have to suffer from swallowing any water.
A semi-dry snorkel has value as well. This type is not as completely effective as a full dry snorkel as it cannot guarantee 100% effectiveness in preventing water from getting in. However, it can reduce the potential enough to make it perfect cheaper option when scuba diving in waters that may be a bit more calm and still.
Purge snorkels are designed to immediately get rid of any water that breaches the interior of the snorkel. Just by pressing a button on the snorkel, a valve will immediately expel any water that has entered. There are also hybrid scuba diving snorkels available as well. For example, you can purchase a dry snorkel that also comes with an effective purge feature. While more costly, the extra cost may be worth it.
Beyond the specific type of snorkel design, you will also want to examine certain attributes possessed by the particular snorkel you are considering buying.
The bore of the snorkel is not something you want to overlook either. The larger the bore then the more air will flow through the snorkel which means more air can reach your lungs.
No matter what type of scuba diving snorkels you purchase, you definitely want to be sure that you are purchasing snorkels that are the proper fit. This will contribute to both function and comfort. Be sure that you are acquiring a snorkel that has the proper bore for your mouth. You definitely want the right fit or else your ability to breathe in air will be compromised.
Of course, you should stick with name brand scuba diving snorkels which have long since established their name in the industry and have a reputation of quality. Thankfully, there are quite a number of high quality snorkels on the market in which you can choose from. Oceanic, Sherwood, and Atomic are all top manufacturers who produce excellent models of snorkels.
