Air Force Question?
I am considering the AF and would like a few intelligent opinions as far as rates go.
I am a security guard currently and want to consider a rate in "Security Forces Apprentice"... Is anyone familiar with the type of training and length of training the AF gives one who enters this field? Is this rate a one way ticket to the middle east(Afghanistan, Iraq, etc)?
I was also considering the rate of Pararescue, but noticed the skills required are not only air and land but it also mentioned scuba diving. I'm not the greatest of swimmers so would that automatically disqualify me, or is it something they would train you to do in spite of your swimming skill level?
Thanks!
I'm going Security Forces in April, it's not anything special, it's just an MP with a different name. We are Military Police for the US Air Force. Read these few pages: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/airforceenlistedjobs/a/afjob3p0x1.htm, it includes training, the length of Tech School (65 days or 13 weeks)...and more detailed information about Security Forces. Of course this training all comes after completing your 6 1/2 (soon to be 8 1/2 in October) weeks at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. Security Forces members leads, manages, supervises, and performs security force (SF) activities, including installation, weapon system, and resource security; antiterrorism; law enforcement and investigations; military working dog function; air base defense; armament and equipment; training; pass and registration; information security; and combat arms.
Hours are long and range from 12-14 hours on a normal day, we work holidays and weekends so good luck taking leave for the holidays. Everyone talks down about Security Forces, but I'm optimistic and look forward to being a member of the US Air Force Security Forces! Oh yea, you'll definitly be sent sent to the Sandbox...thats unavoidable in Security Forces. The good thing is that Air Force people only have to deploy for 6 months, whereas the Marines and Army people deploy for 12-15 months! It's tax free when in a combat area and you'd also get hazardous pay along with combat pay! http://www.military.com/benefits/military-pay. Hope this helps, Good Luck!
