Red Dots As An Alternative To BUIS

The flip-up back-up iron sights that have become fashonable on ARs are excellent but they do have inherent limitations. First, they can't be used instantly - you take a couple of seconds flipping the front and back sights up in order to use them. This can make all the difference in a variety of competitive and combat situations. Secondly, you are back to relying on early 20th century technology. One of the best alternatives is to have an offset mounted or piggybacked red dot sight instantly available. It can also serve in place of a high powered optic should a target appear at close quarters.

One of the most popular options as a secondary red dot is the immensely strong Aimpoint Micro T-1. MIlled or extruded from 6000 series aluminium, this sight is 2.4" long by 1.6" high and weighs just 3.7 oz. with standard Weaver/Picatinny mount and only 3 oz. on its own. It is parallax free and withstands depths of up to 80 ft. The sight can run for 50,000 hours continuously on its 3 volt battery. The sight offers 6 night vision compatible and 7 day settings. The aiming pattern is a single 4 Minute of Angle red dot which is easy to acquire and place on the target. Adjustments are 1/2" at 100 yards or 13mm at 100 metres per click and an adjuster tool is included in the lens cap. The sight is MIL SPEC anodized black. The US Army has now issued the T-1 in Afghanistan with the 3XMag magnifier in an effort to reduce the soldier's burden still further in a theatre where soldiers are already resorting to cutting the handles off toothbrushes to save weight. An amazing variety of mounts are available for this sight including both vertical and canted offset mounts from La Rue Tactical.

Not everyone wears night vision goggles or habitually SCUBA dives with their gun, therefore the manufacturer has come out with the 15 ft rated Aimpoint Micro H-1 model which has 12 day settings, including one extra bright one. The H-1 is otherwise the same sight as the T-1 but optimised for sport shooting, hunting and pest control. This tiny sight does not look in the least out of place on a waterfowl shotgun and has won itself a keen following in the Nordic countries for this purpose and for running boar and moose shooting in the cold and dark conditions that prevail there in winter.

For those with higher power optics, the US Army recently followed the US Navy's lead and type classified the L3  Insight Mini Red Dot Sightor MRDS. This 3.5 MoA red dot sight is 1.9" long, 1.1" wide and 1.5" tall and weighs an amazing 0.85 ounces thanks to its advanced polymer construction. The MRDS employs a single CR-1632 lithium battery and is supplied with an adjuster tool, fixings and a lens cleaning pen. The sight uses 1 MoA clicks and has four brightness levels which can be overridden by the sights own light sensor which adapts to ambient light levels. The Micro Red Dot Sight will initially be issued to snipers and designated marksmen but could well end up on the M150 ACOG. The MRDS will fit any mount designed for the Docter red dot sight.
