Costa Rica's fascinating ecology results from extreme changes in elevation from the central mountain ridge that peaks over 12,000 feet to the low lying coast. On the western edge of Costa Rica, this change is so immediate that it is not unusual to see a 6,000 foot cliff dropping into the ocean. It is definitely a breathtaking sight!

This wide variety of elevation in addition to other growth-optimizing factors such as monsoon force rainy seasons, no cold weather, and rich rainforest soil and it is no wonder that there are over 3,000 different tree species in Costa Rica. That figure dwarfs the approximately 750 different tree species in all of the United States and Canada combined. Obviously, Costa Rica is now a excellent ecotourism destination.

There are a wide variety of great points of interest for the ecotourism in Costa Rica. If you prefer inland adventuring there are numerous camping, cliff climbing, and zip lining opportunities all over the country. Also there is a multitude of streams and rivers carving from the central highlands to the coastal lowlands mean that waterfalls are easy to find in Costa Rica, and the clear blue swimming pools they form are quite a beautiful sight.

Local horseback tours are great way to get a glimpse into the thriving rainforest and enjoy the tranquility and peace without the loud distractions of vehicle traffic. The rainforest is teeming with wild creatures ranging from flamboyantly feathered parrots to the cuddly pizote (an odd mix of raccoon, anteater, and armadillo).

The beaches are also great destinations for the ecotourist. In general, SCUBA diving is not really a good idea in the oceans of because there are very sketchy safety standards to make sure that the air tanks are up to the task.
