Becoming a Dive instructor.?
I am currently an advanced Padi diver. I am off to do my rescue diving soon.
I was just wondering if any scuba instructors out there can tell me about becoming an instructor. (as in pay rate life style etc.)
I am looking at a place in Bali to do a three month internship to become an instructor at the end of next year. Also does any one know if you can stay in America working as a diving instructor (I am an Australian and would like to try and live in USA longer than a work visa permits) -Thanks
Pay rate is a joke, but the job is great, If diving is what you want to do, then go for it, the problem is that with PADI you can become an instructor even if you have only completed a relatively few dives, at the end of your instructors course you can teach people, but you only have limited experience. My suggestions is to dive, dive and dive more, not just in nice clean water but all over the world, try some real bad conditions where your vis is less than a foot, then try cold water, strong currents not just drift diving.
Every one wants to work in a work in nice warm water and sun, the problem is that instructors are two a penny, so they can choose how much they pay and you have no bargaining power, if they say you will be payed $20 a day and you don't think that's enough then there are 5 others who will take the job. You need to have that little extra, that makes them want you.
you do not say how many dives you have done,
As for your permit, I would think that if you have a job then there is a better chance that you can get the permit extended, (not from the States so honestly I don't know)
Good luck
